It was solved after installing the first few Windows Automatic Updates among which audio drivers were not included. I have uninstalled and downloaded and re-installed the driver, and still nothing. Back in June, I reinstalled Windows XP Professional on my computer.

When I test the device the level bars move but no sound comes out of the speakers, headphone jack, or HDMI. How it ever got changed to this wrong setting is a mystery. . . At the bottom service status should read Started. It worked for me.
