The best solution is to go into your setup menu and format the third hard drive to correspond to the primary hard drive. Both cables were DVI, but I read somewhere a guy fixed this by buying a new DVI cable and I had a second one laying around. Following your instructions, I have now successfully added a Samsung hard drive and Windows XP has recognised the primary slave. Just the right amount of geekiness in my opinion for what it's worth! I have no idea where this came from, but I began the task of trial and error disabling and rebooting.
