there is not a lack of communication between the PC and the HDD, just that for some reason it will not boot from the HDD. So make sure it's not rattling around in the machine. It’s possible one of the memory modules failed. I have also been unable to find a schmatic, but have a pretty detailed .pdf for disassembly. is this possible??
Slight hiccup, the latitude fan doesn't come on at start up, so something else to clear. Then hold down the power button for 10 seconds. You have to remove the keyboard (4 screws) and palmrest (8 screws) AND the display (3 screws) to really get in there. On some models you need the mute button plus Power.

Also don't mix them up... I think you hardware guys call this no POST. The second is a little harder. Set the CD drive as the first boot device.

On the third switching on I got a two beep post code, and a set of narrow stripes on the screen. Do so and you should be in - unless it is a more complicated solution but for me booting to cd required this step after analyzing why it wouldn't work. I've got Everest loaded as a diagnostic tool, and it shows a X against a 3D accelerator(whatever that is) and Xs against all the directX entries.
I know the cd fires up briefly, but I'm not 100% certain about the hdd.

If you have no pin sets on the drives, then select Autodetect in the BIOS for the first test and try Cable Select in the second test.
