Fortunatlely all this happened on the first laptop I tried to install upon saving me disasters on my other computers. Does it happen when you plug any USB device in the comp or just one in particular? Its more common when devices are plugged into the front panel but can sometimes happen even on the back ones. While possible to fix those ports, I am betting that just using a powered hub would be easier and cheaper.
