I had always thought that it was better to have a add-on card in almost every case than using the onboard sound, even with my Audigy 2 ZS. i think the damage to the card is a potential problem, but i don't think it's the cause for the panel not working. You can tell that it's an issue with this sound card because as soon as the sound card is disabled the UI functions normally.
